Raman and Optical Characterization of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

Determining the properties of nanomaterials such as cerium oxide (CeO2) requires tools that are accurate and precise. With the decreasing cost of lasers and CCDs (charge-coupled devices), Raman and absorption spectroscopy have become viable tools for this task. Cerium oxide nanoparticles have been shown to improve the oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of various metals when used as a coating. Cerium oxide particles are also partially conductive, and the amount of conductivity increases as grain sizes decrease. It can also act as a catalyst and have possible applications as an electrolyte. In this project, these nanoparticles were examined using Raman and absorption spectroscopy, both as a solid and as a solution in toluene.
