Self Assembly in the Physics Classroom

The primary goal of this lesson outline is to use the process of self assembly as an introduction to the field of materials science. Like many modern topics, self assembly can fit into your curriculum in a number of places, depending on the teacher’s discretion. It seems to be a natural extension of atomic theory, yet could just as easily find a home in lessons regarding electricity, magnetism, or modern physics.
