PROCESSING OF NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS

Faculty Mentor: Prof: S. Suryanarayana

Research Description

Development of advanced materials with enhanced performance has been possible by s ynthesizing metastable materials through non-equilibrium processing methods. One way of achieving metastability is by synthesizing materials with nano grain sizes. Such materials have been shown to have high hardness and strength and useful soft magnetic properties with enhanced catalytic behavior. The synthesis and processing of nanostrucutred materials has assumed greater importance in recent years due to the non-availability of sufficient information regarding the homogeneity, consolidation, stability, and grain growth behavior severely limiting their exploitation for engineering applications.

The undergraduates will be involved in:
  • Learning of the mechanical alloying and its process parameters for synthesizing nanomaterials.
  • Studying phase determination through XRD and microstructural evaluation through TEM and handling of both XRD and TEM instruments.
  • Developing skills in TEM specimen preparation, microscopy and data collection methods.
